On A Personal Note

Last week we had a major wind and rain storm come through our area. Several homes at a nearby beach were nearly swept into the ocean.

Our house was without electricity for 10 hours and it started to get cold. No electricity and 2 small kids in a cold house isn't fun. It also makes it challenging to run an internet business!

Luckily my laptop's nationwide wireless could connect. It also keeps a charge for a long time (5+ hours). Just as we were packing up to go to a hotel room for the night, the power came back on.

We had discussed getting a generator in the past. We are now sorting through our options with it again.

It made me think quite a bit about how much of everything that we enjoy these days is related to the harnessing of electricity.

Forum Stress

For many membership site owners, the upkeep of their forums is one of the more important functions of running their site.

The forum has one of the strongest effects on your attrition (drop out) rate.

People join a site due to your offering, they tend to stay with a site due to the quality of the forum community.

A post this week in our forum brought up the "immediacy issue" of how quickly forum posts should be answered. She felt she was required to answer quickly regardless of what hour the posts came into the forum.

That's completely unrealistic of course.

Considering the time zones and locations of your members, its impossible to expect you to be monitoring the forum 24 hours a day.

Besides that, who says you have to answer every post yourself?

The perfect ideal of a forum is one that requires a minimal amount of interaction on your part. Instead members helping each other is a very good goal to shoot for. The forum then becomes more self sufficient with some (but not all) interaction by you.

Unless you have a very high end coaching club, your forum is a COMMUNITY event.

If you have set yours up as one on one consulting directly with you, I hope you are charging a substantial amount for that service. Even then the members need to know what the expectations are.

Continuing Domain Issues

I mentioned this in a recent newsletter but it bears repeating. I am still hearing from site owners being affected by this.

If you're domain name is registered with RegisterFly.com, transfer your domain names IMMEDIATELY or risk losing them.

They were decertified a few weeks ago as an ICANN recognized registrar. This means that servers around the world will no longer be recognizing the domain names registered with them.

Just this week alone I have talked with 3 membership site owners. Their sites disappeared off the internet. Well actually the sites were still there but the domain name wasn't working anymore. All 3 were RegisterFly customers.

I recommend using GoDaddy's transfer service to get your domain names out of there as soon as possible.

Tupacia asked in the forum:

Tim, I know you've mentioned before about the 6-figure per month membership site success stories out there.

As I go about crafting my own membership site, can you or other members give examples of sites that are doing this kind of volume?

I would love to be able to look at these sites and see what they do that differentiates them from other sites. Thanks guys!

Here are some of the sites that are recommended viewing for some of the best practices that they are using successfully:

Free Cool Tool

Don't Listen to Your Voice mail - Read it Instead via Email

Here's a fantastic service for those on the go.

I've been using it for over a month now and I love it.

It is the SimulScribe service available at SimulScribe.com.

It automatically converts voice mail cellphone messages into an email and sends them to you. I didn't realize how useful this was until trying it out.

Now when my phone is off, or on mute I still know that someone left a message. The service automatically uses voice recognition software to convert the message. It is then sent to my email address(es). I have it sent to my Blackberry phone so I instantly receive an email with the message in it.

There's a free trial to test it out. I like it!

Best wishes for a great week!
